Soft pastels are pure pigment mixed with different degrees of clear binder. Often referred to as chalk, there is no chalk in soft pastels. Pure pigment is mixed on a surface, blending layer after layer. The vibrancy of the pigments, their endurance and easy application, are the medium’s strongest assets, and the reason that this oldest of materials has been in constant use over the millennia.
They do, however, require special handling.
They will smudge if rubbed. The pastel in time will clump in humid conditions. There is no way to "seal" a pastel painting. Fixatives can be applied, but it won't seal the surface, and the vibrancy is diminished. Clearly not the artists internet.
However - With proper handling and framing, a pastel painting will remain pristine and pure.
If you decide to purchase a painting, I will send a "Framing & Handling Tips" sheet with your painting so you and/or your framer can feel confident in handling and maintain the same quality as the day it was painted.
